Preventing water tank contamination after a bush fire
The most effective way is to make sure your tank is properly sealed and to disconnect the downpipes to the tank as soon as there is a bushfire risk, or immediately after. Do not reconnect the downpipes until the roof has been cleaned after the bushfire, either manually with fresh water or after a flush of heavy rain. It is sometimes hard to know what has happened to your water supply during an extreme event or in your absence, so we recommend getting your tank cleaned and refilled with potable water to be sure of what your are drinking. also see our water treatment page if you would like to treat your water.
